The Breck School, a private college preparatory school, envisioned a new entry and commons area to replace a small, dark, hidden, non-accessible entry. The new Commons integrates the new entry and gathering space, creating an identifiable, accessible entry without distracting from the dominance of the school’s chapel. A raised light monitor brings daylight deep into the lobby space while a wood trellis mitigates harsh summer sun. In the evening, the light monitor acts as a glowing beacon identifying the entry. The Commons area is reinvented by a new envelope that connects to outdoor areas, a new metal fireplace enclosure, new restored wood ceiling and better integration with the dining room. A warm wood box creates a welcoming portal to the Commons.
