Atmosphere Commercial Interiors’ headquarters is located in the historic Young Quinlan Building located just off Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. With multiple small-scale renovations taking place over the last twenty years, the leaders decided it was time for a complete revitalization of their spaces. The project started out with leadership visioning sessions in collaboration with Atmosphere’s main vendor, Steelcase’s workplace planning consulting group, to define Atmosphere’s branding and new identity. The outcome of this workshop became the stepping stone for subsequent team member visioning sessions and ultimately set the direction for the design of their new space. A masterplan was created for the multiple areas Atmosphere occupies in the Young Quinlan Building.
Working with tight budget constraints, the proposed design took advantage of the existing tall windows to bring in more natural daylight into the open office areas while limiting the amount of partitions being constructed. Clearly defined main circulation paths were reinforced with exterior window views to guide movement throughout the space. This planning strategy was important to Atmosphere as the work areas have to both function as offices and as a showroom to Atmosphere’s clients. Existing terrazzo floors from the days when Young Quinlan was a department store were brought back to its original shine. Since Atmosphere will be staying in their current office space, the renovation process had to be completed in multiple phases. The design team worked closely with Atmosphere and Ryan Companies to ensure the project was completed on budget.
