After a detailed feasibility study, Snow Kreilich Architects was engaged by GSA to transform the façade and create a new entrance at the 10 West Jackson Federal Building. The renovation of the rear façade into a new lobby and entrance is intended to create a dignified sense of arrival at the workplace for federal employees. The new façade and lobby will create a distinguished, professional sense of arrival for federal employees, conveying the value of their work. The design works well within the rich cultural and architectural context and offers a significant new addition to the federal investment made to improve Quincy Court.
The new entrance to federal offices will be created at the building’s current loading dock. The current façade is unadorned brick masonry, clearly the utilitarian back of the building. The new façade begins by creating a vertical band of light nearest to the entry side which is in dialog with the neighboring façades that emphasize horizontal and vertical window bands. The next step identifies the new entry with a horizontal canopy. Above the canopy, steel panels are assembled in a composition derived from the proportioning system used by Mies van der Rohe. Narrow vertical slots in the steel are filled with translucent resin panels to create a syncopated rhythm of light across the steel.
