The Hollywood Theater is a nationally and locally designated historic building. According to the National Register of Historic Places, the theater is significant for architecture as a substantially intact example of a neighborhood movie theater designed by the architectural firm Liebenberg and Kaplan, masters of movie theater design. Originally constructed in 1935, the single-screen theater is (or was) an example of the Streamline Moderne Style. The original Marquee was replaced in 1948, and is considered the Significant Period for the building and is being restored to the Theater’s look at this time, as much of the material remaining represents this time-frame.
The Theater has not been operational since its closure in 1987. Numerous plans for Preservation and Redevelopment have been made since then, none coming to fruition. Snow Kreilich Architects, in conjunction with Preservation Design Works, and Apiary Development, are completing plans for rehabilitation of the Hollywood Theater into a multi-purpose space for event venue rentals.
