Metro Transit Franklin Avenue Operations + Maintenance Facility

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Franklin Operations & Maintenance Facility (OMF) and Rail Control Center (RCC) expansion is designed to provide improved support for Metro Transit’s growing fleet in their light rail commuter transit system (LRT). The proposed expansion is integrated with the existing maintenance facility building and provides added capacity for operations, maintenance, and control center functions. The building expansion includes additional length added to the LRT vehicle sanding and car wash service bay to service a full length three car consist, additional LRT vehicle overhaul and maintenance bays with service pits and maintenance mezzanines, and body repair and preparation bays for the vehicle paint booth track.

The third-floor expansion accommodates a new expansive rail control center (RCC) room, a situation room and associated offices. Additional renovated areas include a staff break room, locker areas, and additional offices in the existing building. The completed new expansion will provide additional floor space for the existing facility. Additional site improvements are included in the project, such as reconfigured vehicle tracks for access and a dedicated runaround track to allow for reorganizing vehicles within the maintenance facility yard while they are being serviced or stored on-site.
