The existing Steinberg Pavilion and Rink is a beloved public institution that opened in 1957 with a donation from the Steinberg Charitable Trust. The current project will renovate and expand the Frederick Dunn-designed mid-century modern building and site in east Forest Park, St. Louis. Informed by Forest Park’s 1995 Master Plan and continuing in the same spirit of inclusivity, the project reimagines the Steinberg area as a place for all-season fun that is equitably, environmentally, and economically sustainable and inspires a variety of structured and unstructured activities that are welcoming to all.
Forest Park Forever’s commitment to equity and representation is apparent in every aspect of the design process, from research into the facility’s cultural history to community engagement and market analysis. In addition, feedback from the community was solicited before the project’s inception and will continue through all design phases, including predesign & programming, as well as during construction and beyond. The current design is the result of feedback from more than 4,000 people through stakeholder interviews, online surveys, social media outreach, and in-person and virtual open houses to gather community input.
At the rink level, in support of all-season programming, the building houses equipment rental (ice skates during the winter and roller skates during the summer and shoulder seasons), flexible space for skate change, a rink side café, and three party rooms. The rooftop addition activates an underutilized terrace and contains a rooftop restaurant and multipurpose room in one volume and a community living room in the other. In addition, shade structures are located both on the roof terrace and adjacent to the rink, extending the use of the facility through the summer.
